Addis Energy
100 Chestnut St, Suite 300, Somerville, MA, 02143, United States
Overview
Addis Energy is developing a novel geologic ammonia production method that injects nitrogen and water into iron-rich subsurface formations, using natural underground heat and pressure to synthesize ammonia. An AI-aided laboratory of chemical reactors replicates these conditions, allowing the team to test more than 600 rock samples sourced from formations across the United States. By avoiding natural-gas feedstock and the extreme conditions of Haber-Bosch, the process promises a net energy-positive, zero-emission route to ammonia at a significant cost advantage. This innovation targets a market where 70 % of ammonia becomes fertilizer and demand is projected to rise 25 % within five years. The company’s approach could reduce both energy consumption and carbon footprint, providing a domestic alternative in a supply-constrained U.S. market. Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Addis plans to expand its operations team, finish nationwide geological mapping, and move toward its first field pilot. The startup has secured $17.3 million in total funding, including a newly raised $8.3 million seed round.
