Altach Biomedical is a spin-out of Trinity College Dublin developing novel biomimetic collagen scaffolds to encourage innate regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues, particularly articular cartilage. The scaffold is designed to mimic native cartilage properties and provide an alternative to traditional cartilage-repair methods. Company leaders say the technology could reduce recovery times, lower the need for invasive surgeries, and improve patient outcomes. Altach reports more than a decade of R&D, progressing the technology from proof-of-concept to pre-clinical evaluation, and has recently been granted a US patent. The company intends to scale up manufacturing and validate the product in advance of clinical use. Altach has raised €1.2m to bring its product closer to market and progress towards clinical trials and eventual commercialisation.
