Overview
Arago is commercializing a light-powered photonic processor codenamed “JEF” that processes data using lasers instead of transistors. The chip is designed to deliver comparable performance to top GPUs while consuming roughly 10× less energy and maintaining comparable cost. Early results show JEF can run AI models from industry-standard software frameworks and remains compatible with existing AI ecosystems, compute infrastructure, and manufacturing processes. The architecture is presented as a hybrid approach that sidesteps historical technical barriers for photonic and GPU-alternative processors. Founded less than a year ago by Nicolas Muller, Eliott Sarrey and Ambroise Müller, Arago has assembled a lean team of about 20 experts from leading tech companies and research labs. The company plans to use its funding to accelerate product development for commercialisation, expand the team across multiple development sites, and deepen business partnerships.
