Avaxia’s lead clinical candidate is AVX-470, an orally administered, gut-targeted anti-TNF antibody being developed as a potential first-line therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The company initiated a Phase 1b clinical trial of AVX-470 in patients with active ulcerative colitis. Avaxia uses a proprietary oral antibody platform to develop minimally absorbed drugs that act locally in the gastrointestinal tract and is pursuing additional indications including type 2 diabetes, celiac disease, GI acute radiation syndrome, and oral mucositis. In addition to private financing, Avaxia has received funding from BARDA to support AVX-470 development. The company is led by founder and CEO Dr. Barbara Fox, and recently added Henry Kay (Boston Harbor Angels, Launchpad Venture Group) to its board.
