Babylon combines AI technology and medical expertise to deliver digital health tools localized in multiple languages, including an AI symptom checker and an AI-powered Healthcheck. In some countries the company offers 24/7 access to health professionals through virtual consultations. Babylon currently delivers about 4,000 clinical consultations a day, with one patient interaction every 10 seconds. The company has announced contracts since 2017 with partners including Prudential, Samsung, Telus, Bupa and the UK’s NHS. Babylon says its model improves access to high-quality healthcare at lower cost in both developed and emerging markets. The new funding is intended to support product innovation and international expansion into the US and Asia. Babylon Health offers a digital healthcare app combining artificial intelligence with video and text consultations with doctors and specialists. It has an AI-enabled symptom checker that the company says has provided medical advice to over 250,000 people to date and has been trialled with London health authorities as an alternative to the NHS 111 helpline. The company plans to roll out AI-driven diagnosis (beyond triage) later this year and says it has curated large medical knowledge graphs and applied deep learning techniques adapted for healthcare. Dr Ali Parsa is the founder and CEO, and the company is advised by DeepMind founders Demis Hassabis and Mustafa Suleyman. Babylon says the new capital will be used to continue building out its AI capabilities and to move from triage toward full diagnosis. The company recently raised $60 million in new funding and is reported to have a valuation of more than $200 million, with sources placing it in the "right quarter of a billion" ballpark. Babylon Health operates a mobile digital health app that provides video consultations with doctors and subscription or employer-provided access. The company currently employs roughly 100 doctors to serve its users. Babylon plans to add a significant AI component to the app to pre-screen patient symptoms before users opt for text, phone, or video consultations. Founders and advisors from DeepMind are involved with the company and two of DeepMind’s founders contributed to the recent round. The startup intends to use the Series A capital to develop its AI features and to aid hiring as it scales beyond relying solely on its physician base. Babylon has not disclosed an official valuation.
