Biosimo
Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 1-5/10, Zürich, 8093, Switzerland
Overview
Biosimo is an ETH Zurich spinoff that has developed catalytic processes to convert bioethanol into bio-based platform chemicals, including bio acetic acid and its derivatives. Its technology is also suitable for producing acetaldehyde, sodium acetate, and ethyl acetate, targeting chemical manufacturers, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The company cites the global acetic acid market at CHF 13 billion with a 6.2% annual growth rate. Biosimo was incorporated in May this year by co-founders Sotiria Mostrou (CEO) and Maximilian Moser (CTO) and currently has a four-person team. Using proceeds from its pre-seed financing, the startup plans to scale production from gram-scale laboratory output to the first kilograms. The financing package includes grants and private capital to support ramping up production processes. Biosimo develops and operates processes to produce bio-based bulk chemicals, with a focus on bio acetic acid and its derivatives derived from bioethanol. The company positions its product as a direct replacement for fossil-based acetic acid used in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and materials without changing properties, supply chains, or market prices. Biosimo cites a global acetic acid market estimated at CHF 13 billion with a 6.2% annual growth rate. The startup plans to scale up pilot production and bring the first tons of bio acetic acid to market in 2023. In parallel the team is exploring production of derivatives such as ethyl acetate and cellulose acetate, both 100% bio-based. Biosimo received CHF 150,000 from the Venture Kick program to prepare and execute the pilot phase, with the aim of de-risking the technology and securing initial customers and revenues.
