Overview
Biospectal is a Swiss startup founded in 2017 that developed OptiBP, a patented medical-grade app using a smartphone camera and proprietary algorithms to measure blood pressure via a fingertip in roughly 20 seconds. The OptiBP app captures optical signals and transforms them into blood pressure values, connecting data with clinicians to support treatment and remote monitoring without additional hardware or wearables. The technology was developed and validated in partnership with the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) and represents more than ten years of non-invasive optical biosensing R&D, supported by grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada and Innosuisse. A large-scale, third-party clinical research study published by Scientific Reports (Nature) validated OptiBP's accuracy compared with standard cuffs, and two additional global research and validation studies funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Global Grand Challenges Canada were announced in May 2021. OptiBP for Android launched in public beta in January 2021; the iOS version is in alpha with a public beta planned for the second half of 2021. The company closed a $4.3M (€3.7M) seed round and intends to use the funds to scale its OptiBP smartphone blood pressure monitoring application and data platform worldwide. Biospectal develops optical software systems and the OptiBP smartphone app and platform that use a fingertip on a phone camera to produce a blood pressure reading in about 20 seconds with clinical accuracy. The company emphasizes non‑invasive optical biosensing algorithms to enable scalable remote blood pressure monitoring on existing smartphones. Biospectal is led by co‑founder and CEO Eliott Jones alongside co‑founder Dr. Patrick Schoettker. The articles state the company has raised more than CHF 4.5 million to date and reports about 10 employees. Biospectal is participating in Venture Leaders Mobile 2021 and aims to accelerate its expansion into global markets and grow awareness and investment internationally. It is pursuing industry partnerships and collaborators to support that growth.
