Black Bear Carbon

Kennedyplein 101 – 6th Floor, Eindhoven, Limburg, 5611 ZS, Nederland

Overview

Black Bear Carbon recovers high-quality carbon black from end-of-life tyres and converts the remaining materials into oil and gas, which the company says can be used for heat, electricity, or steam and provide additional revenue. The process aims to replace carbon-black produced from fossil fuels with a circular, lower-carbon alternative; the company claims each installation saves more carbon dioxide than 3 million trees consume. Founded by Christopher Twigg and based in Utrecht, the company plans to roll out hundreds of tyre upcycling plants with local partners, focusing next on Europe. Black Bear Carbon's first demo plant was destroyed in a February 2019 fire; the new flagship plant at Chemelot Industrial Park is expected to be operational by mid-2023. Financially, the company completed a first closing of €7.5M as the initial step in a €78M fundraising campaign for the flagship plant.
