Overview

Byrd operates an asset-light, software-led fulfillment network that offers virtual warehousing (colocation), delivery services and proprietary warehouse-management software to e-commerce merchants. The company currently covers seven countries—U.K., France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy and Spain—with plans to launch in Sweden, Denmark and Poland later this year, targeting 30 warehouse locations across 10 countries. Byrd’s platform helps merchants connect, manage and analyze shipments and returns across channels and already fulfills a significant volume of Amazon orders for customers. The startup emphasizes flexibility for retailers that sell through multiple channels and aims to provide fast-shipping and returns capabilities that compete with marketplace-driven offerings. Founders include CEO Alexander Leichter (co-founder) and co-founders Sebastian Mach and Petra Dobrocka (CCO); the company was originally founded in Vienna and is now based in Berlin. Byrd plans to use new funding to expand its network, broaden services and build operations in new verticals such as apparel. Byrd provides software to manage warehouses and logistics and runs a service that helps online merchants receive, store, pick and deliver orders via a network of fulfillment centers. The company offers APIs to integrate merchants' storefronts and marketplaces and taps shipping partners such as UPS, DHL, Amazon and postNL to route orders. Byrd also enables customizable packaging and options for more sustainable delivery so brands can preserve their customer experience. Founded in Vienna, Austria in 2016, it is active in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France, operating some 15 fulfillment centers and serving roughly 200 customers. Revenues are up 300% year-over-year and the company handles “hundreds of thousands of parcels per month.” Byrd plans to expand into five additional markets across eastern, northern and southern Europe and will bring B2B capabilities online in the coming months. byrd operates a tech-driven fulfillment platform that integrates with leading e-commerce systems such as Shopify and connects merchants to qualified logistics partners and partner warehouses internationally. The company enables retailers to offer advanced, international shipping options without building their own logistics network. Founded in 2016 and based in Berlin and Vienna, byrd runs fulfillment locations in Germany and Austria, operates in the UK, and plans new locations in the Netherlands and France. It currently ships 10,000 orders per day from more than 10 warehouses and manages storage capacities of more than 500,000 square meters. The company has 60 employees and intends to use new funds to expand its virtual warehouse network to let retailers in eight markets ship worldwide by the end of the year. Total funding has reached more than €9m following the latest round. byrd provides an iOS app that lets private and business customers photograph an item, request a courier pickup (€4.90 per pickup), and have the item packaged and shipped at the lowest available price. The service handles the first mile by collecting unpackaged items, bringing them to a warehouse for packaging, and placing them into the logistics cycle. The startup completed a test phase for businesses and is already shipping a four-digit number of parcels per month. The app initially launched in inner Vienna (districts 1–9, 20) with city-wide expansion and expansion into other cities underway, including plans to expand into Germany. Founded in 2016, byrd was part of the TUW i²nkubator and emphasizes speeding up and simplifying shipping through technology.
