Overview
Calxeda designs ultra-low-power server chips built on ARM processors as an alternative to Intel x86 chips. Its core product targets micro-servers and data-center deployments where power efficiency and lower cost are priorities. The company is working with HP to develop new micro-server technology and says it will have a production server ready by the end of the year. Calxeda faces competition from firms including Applied Micro, Cavium, Marvell, Nvidia, and Samsung. Power efficiency and total cost of ownership are central to its value proposition as data-center owners seek performance at lower power. The company is based in Austin and has accumulated significant external investment to support product development. Calxeda designs ultra-low-power processors, similar to those used in mobile phones, aimed at reducing the energy and space requirements of data centers. The company rebranded from Smooth-Stone to Calxeda, launched a new website, and moved into a new corporate headquarters in Austin, Texas. It expanded its executive team with three vice presidents — Karl Freund, Bob Baughman and Steve Beatty — who joined from IBM, Polycom and Freescale. Founded in January 2008, Calxeda raised a $48 million investment in August from a syndicate of venture capital firms and semiconductor companies. Investors in that round included ARM, Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), Battery Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, Highland Capital Partners and Texas Instruments. The funding positions the company to continue developing its low-power server processors and commercializing energy-efficient data center solutions.
