Overview
Carto is a spatial analysis platform that lets companies display and analyze location-linked data on interactive maps to inform decisions such as site selection, advertising allocation, supply‑chain optimization and telecom deployment. The product can ingest data from local files, databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server), cloud storage (Dropbox, Box, Google Drive) and data warehouses (Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Snowflake), and supports SQL queries and data enrichment. Carto has compiled a data catalog of around 10,000 data sets, roughly 3,600 of which are open data, to help users enrich analyses. Its cloud‑native Spatial Extension runs on top of major data warehouses and is positioned as a performant, scalable and secure suite for geospatial analysis, according to CEO Luis Sanz. Customers include local governments, banks, consumer packaged goods companies, credit card networks and infrastructure firms in transport, utilities and telecommunications. Carto recently raised a $61 million Series C to support its growth and to capitalize on the broader shift to cloud data warehouses and digital transformation. CartoDB offers mapping and data-visualization software that lets users upload datasets and create maps using templates and automated analysis. The platform includes a One-Click Mapping feature that analyzes uploaded data and automatically generates relevant visualizations. Customers use CartoDB for everything from real-time visualizations (e.g., Super Bowl tweets) to sophisticated analyses like nocturnal bird migration studies. The company serves over 1,000 paying customers—including banks and government departments—and also offers free accounts for basic features. CartoDB aims to broaden adoption among individual and business users worldwide and to improve its mapping and data-processing algorithms as more customers contribute data. Financially, it announced a $23M Series B that brings total funding to $31M. CartoDB is an open source web mapping and geospatial application platform that provides tools for building dynamic and real-time maps and visualizations. It leverages a grassroots community that updates data and applications via a web editor and an API. The company reports over 50,000 users and more than 100,000 active applications. Customers include Deloitte, Twitter, NASA, the UN, the National Park Service and universities such as Stanford, Yale and Columbia. CartoDB aims to strengthen its capabilities in dynamic/realtime maps, visualization and ‘storytelling’ by layering social network data and content over maps. The startup emerged out of Madrid and is now headquartered in New York. Odyssey.js is an open-source JavaScript library created by the CartoDB team to turn data into interactive, map-based multimedia stories without requiring coding skills. It leverages maps and integrates Markdown and JavaScript to let creators build text-to-HTML story experiences enriched with interactive maps. CartoDB designed the tool to be easy to embed within content-management systems so publishers can add interactive maps to their websites. A beta of Odyssey.js was released after the creators received a $35,000 grant from the Knight Prototype Fund. The Knight Foundation runs the Prototype Fund and, per the article, provides about $100 million in grants annually, with $30–40 million directed to its journalism and media innovation program. CartoDB hopes Odyssey.js will push storytelling beyond traditional text, photos, and video to increase readership and help audiences make sense of large data sets; the JavaScript library is available for anyone to use.
