Overview
Chartboost provides an SDK that developers use to promote other apps for cross-promotion and to monetize excess inventory through an opt-in ad exchange that offers revenue sharing. Developers can buy promotion on a cost-per-click or cost-per-install basis and access analytics through the platform. The company reports powering over 300 million monthly active devices, 6 billion game sessions per month, and appearing in more than 12,000 games (up from 4,000 developers and 2 billion sessions in June 2012). Chartboost was founded in 2011 by former Tapulous employees Maria Alegre (CEO) and Sean Fannan (CTO). The company said it was already profitable at the time of its $2 million Series A in October 2011. With the new funding, Chartboost plans to further product development in in-app monetization and analytics, grow headcount, hire engineers with game-development backgrounds, and expand into a larger SOMA office. Chartboost operates a free ad-serving technology platform and a direct-deal advertising marketplace for game publishers. Its marketplace enables publishers to monetize by directly promoting other publishers’ apps. The company counts makers of apps such as Pocket Gems, Tinyco, Gameview and The Playforge on its marketplace. Chartboost plans to use the funding to scale product development and to reach and serve more publishers globally. It is hiring engineers to support those efforts. The company was founded by CEO Maria Alegre and Sean Fannan.
