Overview

Complix develops a pipeline of Cell Penetrating Alphabody™ (CPAB)–based oncology therapeutics aimed at intracellular targets. Its CPAB platform can be designed to address targets in both the cytosol and the nucleus of cancer cells. The company has an ongoing strategic collaboration with Merck & Co to develop CPAB therapeutics against two selected intracellular cancer targets; that collaboration was recently expanded. Under the terms of the Merck collaboration, Complix is eligible to receive up to $280 million in upfront and development and regulatory milestones, plus tiered mid-single-digit royalties on global sales. Complix will use the €0.5m grant from the Flemish Agency for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO) to further develop its CPAB platform targeting nuclear targets. Since its foundation in 2008 and based in Hasselt, Belgium, Complix has raised more than €27 million through several rounds of venture financing. Complix is a biopharmaceutical company developing Alphabodies, a class of protein therapeutics active against intracellular disease targets. Alphabodies combine antibody-like target specificity and affinity with small-molecule benefits such as stability and the capacity to penetrate cells, enabling access to targets considered undruggable by conventional antibodies and small chemicals. Led by CEO Dr Mark Vaeck, the company is based in the BioVille life-sciences incubator in Hasselt and operates research facilities in Ghent and a fully owned subsidiary in Luxembourg. Complix closed a €12m Series B equity financing to support development. The company intends to use the funds to develop therapeutic Alphabodies for cancer and autoimmune indications and to further expand and validate its Alphabody platform. The Series B also brought new investors and board appointees to support clinical and platform advancement. Complix develops Alphabodies™, a proprietary class of protein drugs, and is building a preclinical pipeline around those molecules. The company raised an additional €2m as part of an extension of its Series A equity financing to fund portfolio development and lead-product advancement. Proceeds will support preclinical programs targeting autoimmune indications (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis) and infectious viral diseases (influenza, HIV, RSV). The funds are intended to advance the lead product to regulatory filing in order to initiate clinical trials in the second half of 2012. In conjunction with the financing, Emmanuelle Coutanceau, PhD, from Crédit Agricole Private Equity joined Complix’s board. Founded two years earlier and led by CEO Dr Mark Vaeck, the company is headquartered in the Life Sciences incubator BioVille and maintains research facilities in Ghent and in Luxembourg, where it has a wholly owned subsidiary. Complix NV is a Hasselt, Belgium–based company focused on the discovery and development of drugs based on “Alphabodies,” an innovative class of biopharmaceuticals. Alphabodies are small, single-chain therapeutic proteins roughly 10–15 times smaller than antibodies and can address targets not easily accessible by antibodies or other protein drugs. The company will use the new capital to start developing a portfolio of therapeutic products built on its proprietary Alphabody™ platform, with initial R&D focused on novel therapies for autoimmunity and infectious diseases. Complix operates research facilities in Ghent and has established a fully owned subsidiary in Luxembourg focused on discovery of novel anti-viral therapeutics. It also maintains a strategic alliance with the public research institute CRP-Santé.
