Overview
Constructive Bio develops proprietary genome-synthesis and protein-translation platforms that turn living cells into biofactories capable of creating sustainable materials and novel therapeutics. The company writes entire custom genomes with full control of the genetic sequence and engineers protein translation to biomanufacture entirely new molecules with novel properties and functions. It reports having optimised its synthetic organisms and demonstrated scalable production of multi-functionalised proteins at commercial titres. Since launching in 2022, Constructive Bio says it has unlocked commercial potential across pharmaceuticals, chemicals, materials and consumer goods. The company intends to use new funding to further develop its technology to create new therapeutics and synthesise pharmaceuticals at scale. Financially, the company has raised $58M in a Series A and $75M in total to date. Constructive Bio is a Cambridge, UK-based biotechnology company focused on platform technologies that enable genome-scale engineering and synthesis of non-natural polymers. The company is built on two proprietary platforms: large-scale DNA assembly, which can construct large chunks of DNA including whole bacterial genomes, and genome reprogramming to systematically recode whole genomes. Constructive Bio signed an exclusive license from the Medical Research Council to IP developed by Professor Jason Chin’s Laboratory at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Chin Lab methods enable organisms that use new genetic codes, yielding properties such as broad viral (phage) resistance and the ability to produce unnatural polymers and novel functions. Constructive Bio plans to use its platforms to synthesise polymers with non-natural amino acids for commercial applications across therapeutics, antibiotics, agriculture, manufacturing and materials. The company also intends to leverage the phage resistance of its engineered organisms to increase bio-manufacturing yields. It raised $15M in seed funding to build out these technology platforms for commercial application.
