Overview

Mesosphere builds DC/OS, a hybrid cloud platform that automates operations to deliver digital transformation technologies and an "as-a-Service" experience for container tools like Kubernetes and for data engineering and machine-learning tools. The platform enables running TensorFlow, Apache Kafka, Cassandra, and Spark on any infrastructure. The company plans to use the newly raised funds to continue to grow operations. Mesosphere is led by CEO and co-founder Florian Leibert and COO William Freiberg and is based in San Francisco with additional offices in New York, Hamburg, and Beijing. More than 125 enterprise customers, including about 30% of the Fortune 50 and customers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Royal Caribbean, Deutsche Telekom, and NBCUniversal, use the platform in production. Mesosphere builds a Data Center Operating System (DCOS) to help enterprises better utilize their datacenters through container orchestration. The company announced a $73.5M Series C and plans to continue heavy investment in engineering while expanding sales and support for enterprise customers. Mesosphere launched Velocity, a CI/CD product that combines Jenkins with its Marathon container orchestration to offer a highly scalable continuous integration platform. The company cited Global 2000 customers such as Verizon, which selected DCOS as their global data center orchestration platform. The round was reported at a $600M valuation and brings Mesosphere’s total capital raised to $126M. Mesosphere said Microsoft and HPE’s involvement will help accelerate hybrid deployments and the transformation of the datacenter. Mesosphere commercializes the Apache Mesos project and has released an early version of a data center operating system (DCOS) that treats an entire data center as a single virtual resource pool. DCOS lets administrators spin up server clusters much faster, reducing cluster provisioning from days or weeks to hours or minutes, and it can span thousands of machines. Mesosphere cites a reference customer running 50,000 nodes on DCOS and says it can scale to 500,000 nodes by the end of next year. The platform includes a library of packages (Apache Spark, Cassandra, Hadoop and Google Kubernetes among them) and supports CLI, GUI, scheduler triggers and an API for automation. DCOS is compatible with several Linux distributions (Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu, CoreOS) and with public clouds (Amazon, Google, Microsoft) as well as private infrastructure (VMs, bare metal, OpenStack). General availability is planned for next year while an early access program is already underway. Mesosphere commercializes the open-source Apache Mesos project to allow datacenters to be treated as a single pooled machine for more efficient resource allocation. Its software leverages containerization concepts popularized by Google to isolate processes and run complex, scaled applications across many machines. The company offers products such as Elastic Mesos (which can create a running Mesos cluster on Amazon Web Services in three steps), Marathon for large-scale orchestration, and Deimos for Docker integration. Mesosphere says its platform is fault tolerant and can transfer workloads automatically if a machine fails, and it is already in production at companies including Twitter, Airbnb, eBay and Netflix. The company intends to bring simplified Mesos management to on-premises platforms (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Debian), private clouds like OpenStack, and public clouds including AWS, Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean. Financially, Mesosphere has secured seed funding and a recent Series A to support product development and expansion.
