Overview
Emma is a personal finance management app that connects to users' bank accounts and crypto wallets to help them budget, track spending, find wasteful subscriptions, and avoid overdrafts. The app offers a free core product and a paid subscription, Emma Pro, which adds features like custom categories, manual accounts and transactions, data export, and transaction splitting. Emma launched in the U.K. in early 2018 and has expanded to the U.S. and Canada; it uses TrueLayer for account aggregation in the U.K. and Plaid in the U.S. The company reports about 200,000 users and high engagement — users open the app on average five times a week, twice a day. Founder and CEO Edoardo Moreni frames Emma as “financial therapy” with a mission to reduce anxiety around money and improve financial education and empowerment. The team says it will launch in every English-speaking country and plans to raise a Series A within the next 12 months. Emma is a U.K. personal finance app that aggregates bank accounts, credit cards, savings and now cryptocurrency to give users a unified view of their finances. It integrates with Coinbase, Bittrex, Binance, Bitstamp, Kraken, Bitfinex and individual Bitcoin and Ethereum addresses to surface crypto balances. At launch the cryptocurrency support is read-only, so users cannot transact within Emma and must still use individual exchanges to buy or trade. The company plans to roll out write features for both traditional banking (leveraging Open Banking) and crypto by partnering with providers to enable transactions and crypto savings based on behavioural rules and risk appetite. Emma's stated mission is to use aggregated data to help users improve their financial wellbeing with features like synced budgets, recurring-payment tracking, overdraft alerts, fee detection, spending insights and a real-time currency converter. Financially, Emma raised a £500,000 seed round in July 2018 led by Kima Ventures and Aglaé Ventures.
