Empo Health
881 Sneath Lane Ste 111, San Bruno, CA, 94066, USA
Overview
Empo Health has developed an at-home diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) monitoring system that pairs the FDA-listed Empo Footprint imaging scale with the HIPAA-compliant Empo Remote Health Link service. Patients step on the Footprint scale to generate a full-color visual image of their feet that is automatically transmitted to care teams for early detection and follow-up. In a pilot study Empo demonstrated near-daily patient engagement and detected early indications of ulcers in half of participants. The company emphasizes ease-of-use to increase adoption among high-risk neuropathy patients and to give clinicians actionable remote data. Empo was incorporated in 2020, is based in the San Francisco Bay Area (San Bruno, Calif.), and was founded by MIT- and Stanford-trained technical founders. The company is supported by venture and angel investors and SBIR grants, and is commercializing its solution while initiating further studies with partners such as Carilion Clinic. Financially, Empo recently closed a $7M financing, bringing total capital raised to date to $15M. Empo Health develops a patented in-home monitoring system built around a smart bathroom scale that detects changes in daily foot scans to enable early detection of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). The company aims to eliminate severe DFUs by integrating monitoring into patients’ daily routines and delivering actionable data to medical professionals. DFUs affect up to 26 million people each year, and Empo positions its product to reduce serious complications through earlier intervention. Empo’s technology is designed to fit seamlessly into daily use, providing crucial information to clinicians for informed care decisions. SeaX Ventures has invested in the seed-stage startup, signaling early external backing. SeaX’s founder described Empo’s technology as a game-changer and cited prior market issues with false positives and cumbersome user experiences that Empo seeks to address.
