Overview

Etsy operates an online marketplace focused on handmade and vintage goods, facilitating transactions between buyers and sellers. The company plans to use new funding to expand internationally and to offer more products and services to help sellers grow their businesses on the Etsy platform. Etsy has already launched in Germany and France and aims to bring more wholesale opportunities to sellers following its acquisition of Trunkt. Last year about $525 million changed hands among Etsy buyers and sellers, and the community sold roughly $65 million worth of goods in the most recent month reported. The site attracts about 40 million monthly visitors, has about 15 million registered users, and roughly 875,000 sellers in 150 countries. Etsy employs about 300 people. Etsy operates a craft-focused e-commerce marketplace connecting buyers and sellers. The company began turning a profit at the end of last year when Rob Kalin resumed as CEO. Kalin projects revenues this year between $30 million and $50 million and expects continued profitability. Etsy has 125 employees and expects the total gross value of goods traded on the site to double this year to $400 million, with a goal of $1 billion next year. The business recently completed a financing that included a large secondary component—most of the shares sold were held by early investors. Index Ventures led the round and other strategic investors participated, with an Index partner taking an observer seat on the board. Etsy operates an online marketplace focused on handcrafted goods and vintage items, connecting individual craft sellers with buyers. Since launching in June 2005, the Brooklyn-based site has grown to 650,000 members, including 120,000 craft sellers across 127 countries, and employs about 50 people. The site reached roughly 1 million unique U.S. visitors (1.6 million worldwide) and Etsy’s founder said the company is “almost break-even.” The company plans to use new funding to buy $5 million of hardware and hosting over two years, add multi-currency and language support, fix checkout and search, and expand customer service. Additional stated priorities are providing competitive wages, a recession cushion, and building toward long-term independence and an eventual public listing.
