Eye‑Fi produces wireless SD memory cards that automatically upload and sync photos and videos to devices and cloud services such as Facebook, Flickr, Picasa and YouTube. Its products include mobile applications for iPhone, iPad and Android that work with its cards to move media to phones and the cloud. The company reports more than 300 million photos and videos uploaded last year and has invested tens of millions into its technology. Eye‑Fi has partnered with NTT DOCOMO to enable carrier‑enabled activation and configuration directly from customers' phones, removing the need for a computer. That partnership will allow DOCOMO’s 59 million subscribers to upload camera photos to phones and sync them to other devices, including digital photo frames. Eye‑Fi says the move supports planned international growth and could help the company expand beyond SD cards into broader mobile and service offerings for smartphone owners. Eye‑Fi develops technologies that enable digital cameras to send photos over Wi‑Fi so users need not transfer files to a computer or be near one to upload or print images. The product removes the manual step of connecting cameras to computers and aims to streamline photo sharing. The company raised $5.5 million in a Series A to enhance operations and product development. Investors in the round were Opus Capital and Shasta Ventures. Shasta Ventures’ managing director Robert Coneybeer called the problem a real one and said there is a huge market opportunity among Wi‑Fi networked camera owners. Eye‑Fi faces competition from cell phones with built‑in photo transfer features and will need to convince users to switch to its solution.
