Fischer Farms
Unit 1a, Threshing Barn, Blakenhall Park, Bar Lane, Barton Under Needwood, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, DE13 8AJ, United Kingdom
Overview
Fischer Farms builds large-scale vertical farms that deliver year-round leafy salads, leafy herbs and other fresh produce from stacked growing systems. Its new Norfolk site will offer 25,000 m2 of growing space (a 4-acre facility said to match the output of roughly 1,000 acres of conventional farmland) and the capacity to supply about 6.5 tonnes of produce to UK supermarkets each day. The farms use up to 98% less water, avoid pesticides/herbicides/insecticides, and are powered by 100% renewable energy to produce consistent, long-lasting British-grown produce. The site is slated to open in winter 2022 and Fischer Farms says the model has no impact on surrounding countryside. Over the next decade the company plans to scale operations and reduce its cost base to enable cost-competitive cultivation of crops such as soya beans, rice, and wheat. Recent funding will also support hiring, training and upskilling of a specialised labour force to operate the technology at scale.
