Flook, from Ambient Industries, operates a web app and an iPhone app that has been described as a StumbleUpon for location-based discovery. Users create “cards” — title, picture, caption, category — and tag them to locations for others to find, collect, or follow creators. The app integrates with Last.fm and surfaces events in real time by proximity so users can discover and act on nearby happenings. The company reports recent growth of 19,000 new users in seven days, 26,000 in the last 30 days, and a total user base of over 50,000, with a 70/30 female skew. Flook is a top-downloaded travel app in the UK, is gaining traction in Asia, and has been an iTunes staff pick twice. Its commercial approach includes deals with content providers such as the British Library, Postal Heritage and Reveal King’s Cross. Two founders, Roger Nolan and Jane Sales, are noted for previous work at Psion.
