Fluential, founded as Sehda in 2001, builds speech-optimization and deep language understanding software for mobile devices, wearables and consumer personal-assistant applications. The company initially worked on mobile translators, deployed its technology in military settings, and moved to hospital use in 2007 before rebranding and focusing on healthcare. Fluential holds six patents in speech recognition and natural language processing, with nine additional patents pending, and it received angel funding in 2011. Its first consumer application—targeting digital health, wellness, and weight management—was slated for release in Spring 2014. The company positions its technology to run on smartphones, smartwatches, Google Glass and other wearables and faces competition from Siri/Nuance and other voice platforms. Nant Health’s investment is intended to support Fluential’s efforts to voice-enable consumer health across devices.
