Flytrex develops its own delivery aircraft and accompanying control software to provide backyard drop-and-go deliveries in suburban areas. The company runs pilots with partners including Walmart and Chili’s and has U.S. pilots in Fayetteville and Raeford, North Carolina. Flytrex is pursuing FAA certification to have its aircraft certified as commercial airplanes, and the CEO said the company estimates national approval by the first half of next year. Its aircraft are currently approved in North Carolina to fly one nautical mile, while the designs have a range of about three miles each direction. Flytrex has mapped more than 80 million backyards and operates a cloud fleet-management stack that trains local “flight operators” drawn from existing delivery fleets. Since February 2021 the company says order volume has increased more than tenfold, with thousands of deliveries to date. Financially, Flytrex has raised $20.3 million to date and recently added $8 million in investment plus an Israeli Innovation Authority grant, bringing new funds available to $9.3 million. Its platform targets delivery companies and large retailers and combines fleet tracking with drones designed to lower packages via cables rather than landing. The company began by making a 'black box'-style flight recorder and cloud service for personal drones and has shifted focus to commercial delivery projects. Reported projects include electronic parts delivery in Europe, lifesaving drug delivery in Africa, and a parcel-delivery partnership with Ukraine’s national postal service, UkrPoshta. Flytrex positions drone deliveries as a long-term, disruptive opportunity and projects the market could be worth $100B in the years to come. The startup recently raised $3M to build out its solution and faces regulatory hurdles such as air-traffic management and consumer safety as it scales.
