FocalPoint offers a software-based solution that improves GPS and other global navigation satellite system performance, accuracy and security without requiring chipset upgrades. Its algorithms infer satellite signal directions to boost positioning and detect spoofing while making lower‑battery‑intensive bands more useful. The technology currently works up to 4G and is planned to be extended to 5G and Wi‑Fi; use cases include smartphone navigation, sports tracking, fleet management and broader navigation services. The company says its approach effectively synthesizes expensive military‑grade antenna capabilities in software, lowering cost and complexity for deployments. FocalPoint is a Cambridge University spinout based in Cambridge, and its leadership includes founder and CTO Ramsey Faragher and CEO Scott Pomerantz, who joined last September. It has run trials with partners, including a test with Google’s Android team in London. FocalPoint develops next‑generation positioning technology to address GNSS signal loss caused by obscured, reflected and weak satellite signals in cities and built‑up environments. Its technology aims to reduce positioning and timing errors that affect autonomous vehicles, aircraft, drones and robots. The company also says its proprietary approach can lower battery consumption for industrial IoT devices. FocalPoint's team includes former members of Cambridge University’s Experimental and Theoretical Physics department, BAE Systems and the European Space Agency. The firm won “Europe’s Hottest SpaceTech Start‑up” at the 2020 Europas. Financially, FocalPoint recently closed a £6 million Series B, bringing total capital raised to £10 million.
