Formal
577 Howard St, Fl 4, San Francisco, CA, 94105, US
Overview
Formal builds a reverse-proxy that sits in customers' VPCs to log every request to data stores and enforce access policies for data and APIs. After deploying the Formal Connector and updating applications to use the proxy, each query is checked against Formal's policy engine to dynamically mask or filter data. The company also offers an agent that can transparently redirect engineering traffic to the proxy. Formal positions itself as an abstraction layer to give CISOs and CTOs visibility and control over data flows across modern cloud and data stacks and to help customers meet regulations such as the EU's GDPR. Early customers include Gusto, Notion and Ramp. The company came out of stealth and is led by founder Mokhtar Bacha, who previously worked at ConsenSys and entered Y Combinator as a solo founder. In late 2023 Formal raised a $5.8 million seed round.
