Fuel (formerly Grantoo) provides a platform for creating engaging connected experiences in mobile games, enabling publishers to launch multiplayer challenges and host live events and tournaments. Its PropellerSDK allows developers to customize and deliver a seamless in-game experience for those events. The platform is used by publishers including Miniclip, Spry Fox, and Huuuge Games. The company raised $3.5M in financing and intends to use the funds to expand adoption of its platform. Grantoo operates a social gaming platform that allows college students with .edu emails to compete in brand-sponsored tournaments to win tuition grants and direct part of winnings to charities. The company launched in beta in spring and opened to all students during the trial, giving away over $30K in tuition grants and raising over $10K for charity with participation from institutions like Yale, Duke, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA and USC. As of the article, the platform is open to everyone and plans to distribute over $100K in rewards this fall. Grantoo started on the web but is pushing into mobile gaming, with two original iOS and Android titles planned for November. To support that push, the startup hired Alan Price, former CTO of EA Canada, as its new CTO. The company covers operational costs with its own advertising and said it plans to raise a larger Series A round this winter.
