General Galactic

113 Sierra Street, El Segundo, CA, 90245, United States

Overview

General Galactic develops reactors that convert carbon dioxide into methane, originally conceived for Mars but repurposed for terrestrial industrial use. The founders, Halen Mattison and Luke Neise, emerged from stealth in April and are SpaceX and aerospace alumni. The company has a pilot system producing about 2,000 liters of methane per day and expects throughput to rise as it replaces off‑the‑shelf components with in‑house designs. It plans to assemble reactors using mass production techniques and to deploy its first modules in 2025. General Galactic intends to sell methane as an input for chemical and plastic manufacturing and is exploring other hydrocarbons such as jet fuel. The team positions its modules to plug into existing infrastructure to speed adoption, while acknowledging methane leakage risks that could undermine carbon claims. General Galactic develops an end-to-end e‑fuels system that captures CO2, produces hydrogen from water, and synthesizes methane, all designed to run on renewable power. The founders, Halen Mattison and Luke Neise, launched the company after graduating from Stanford in 2022; Mattison began the idea while working on propellant generation at SpaceX. Unlike firms that focus on a single component, General Galactic is designing the entire stack in-house and modularizing components for mass production and easier deployment. The company is initially focused on its methane reactor and reports producing about 2,000 liters of methane per day. Its commercial strategy is to sell fuel rather than equipment, which it says aligns incentives to drive down production costs. To date the startup has raised a $1.9 million pre-seed round and remains in early, stealthy stages of development.
