Overview
Gojimo is a mobile and web app that delivers curriculum-specific exam preparation material to U.K. high school students. The app is available on iOS, Android and the web and offers over 180,000 revision questions with detailed explanations written and fact-checked by subject experts. Gojimo is experimenting with premium content from major educational publishers such as McGraw-Hill Education and Oxford University Press, offered via in-app purchases. In May, 300,000 students used the app, representing more than 20% of all GCSE and A Level students. CEO George Burgess founded the startup after dropping out of Stanford and says the company faces little serious competition in the U.K. Financially, the startup has raised just over $3 million to date, including a recent $1.8 million round. Gojimo is a mobile-first education platform that consolidates more than 100 standalone EducationApps into a single app focused on exam revision. Originating from a 2009 app built by George Burgess, the product packages publisher content into ebook-style mobile study guides and quizzes for iOS. At launch it features content from Oxford University Press and McGraw Hill and is negotiating additional major publishers, with an aim to have every major U.K. academic publisher mid-year. The app is free to download while students or schools buy specific content via in-app purchases; Gojimo also built an online volume-selling system to enable bulk school licensing. The company plans to add multimedia, interactivity, gamification, leaderboards and teacher assignment tools (planned for March or April) to increase engagement. Initially targeting U.S. and U.K. markets, Gojimo has longer-term plans to expand into developing countries. Its predecessor EducationApps accumulated over 250,000 downloads across more than 100 apps.
