Good Start Genetics

237 Putnam Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139, United States

Overview

Good Start Genetics offers a next-generation sequencing (NGS) based carrier screening service, GoodStart Select, through a high-complexity, CLIA- and CAP-accredited laboratory. Since its April 2012 commercial launch targeting the roughly 460 U.S. IVF centers, the lab has processed tens of thousands of test orders. GoodStart Select covers all 23 disorders recommended by major medical societies and detects both common and rare pathogenic mutations that older genotyping methods may miss. The company positions its technology as a new gold standard in carrier screening for fertility specialists and patients. Management says it will use new capital to grow its presence within the IVF community and to evaluate expansion into other areas, including global carrier screening markets. The company states it is in a strong financial position with sufficient capital to exceed its projected 2013 profitability and cash-flow goals. Good Start Genetics is a Cambridge, Mass.-based molecular diagnostics company that offers pre-conception carrier screening tests. The company leverages sequencing and other technologies to provide tests for all ACOG and ACMG recommended disorders. It has a proprietary technology platform it intends to develop for future applications. Under President and CEO Don Hardison, the company is focused on expanding commercial adoption of its carrier screening offerings. Financially, it has completed a $14m Series B financing. The new capital will be directed toward commercial expansion and R&D initiatives around its platform. Good Start Genetics, Inc., based in Boston, MA, develops a pre-pregnancy genetic test delivered to physicians. The test uses advanced DNA sequencing technology to screen for a panel of genetic disorders, including those recommended by ACOG and ACMG. The company plans to complete development and launch the test exclusively through board-certified physicians in the U.S. beginning in 2011. Financially, Good Start finalized an $18M Series A financing to fund completion and launch. The company previously received initial seed financing from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s Accelerator Program. Leadership changes accompanied the raise, including the appointment of Don Hardison as President, CEO and Director, and a board chaired by Marc Beer.
