Heimdal

Aldgate Tower, 2 Leman Street, 6th floor, London, England, E1 8FA, United Kingdom

Overview

Heimdal has developed a process that alkalinizes seawater and precipitates calcium, magnesium and sodium carbonates while isolating gaseous hydrogen and chlorine, permanently sequestering dissolved CO2. At lab scale the company reports that every kiloton of seawater yields one ton of CO2 captured and two tons of carbonates. Its products include CaCO3 (limestone), MgCO3 and Na2CO3, with limestone targeted at cement makers as a carbon-negative alternative. Heimdal has demonstrated its process at small prototype scale and has signed letters of intent with several large cement and glass manufacturers. The company is planning a first pilot facility at a U.S. desalination plant and aims to enter commercial production in 2023 after providing test products at the tens-of-tons scale. Heimdal reports revenue per ton in the range of over $500–$600 and says profit per ton of CO2 captured is already around 75% of that figure when incentives are included.
