135 Plymouth St Unit 209, Brooklyn, NY, 11201, United States
Overview
Hopscotch builds a mobile-first visual programming language delivered as an iPad app that teaches kids to code by dragging and dropping command blocks to create animations, games and interactive art. The app launched in April 2013 and is used by kids and teachers in over 100 countries. It is intentionally open-ended rather than challenge‑based and targets children roughly 8–12 (with younger kids and many adults also engaging). The team bootstrapped for over a year before raising external capital and recently secured $1.2 million in funding. Near-term product and business plans include adding in-app purchases as the primary monetization mechanism. Management’s stated goal is to begin bringing in revenue within the next six months, and the company has leaned on awards and competition wins to boost exposure.
