Overview
Hummingbird, founded in the UK in 2016, uses drone, aerial and satellite imagery combined with weather and soil data, processed by artificial intelligence, machine learning and plant pathology, to produce agronomic insights. Its platform makes yield predictions, manages nitrogen levels and diagnoses disease for crops including soybeans, oilseed rape, cereals, sugarbeets, peas and potatoes. The company began as a drone-focused precision agriculture firm two years ago but evolved to be data-source agnostic, treating collection method as secondary to the data itself. In the last year Hummingbird expanded onto two additional continents, working in Russia and Ukraine as well as Brazil, and plans further expansion across three continents. It raised a £3 million ($4.1 million) Series A to support that expansion and platform growth. Hummingbird is also running a £100,000 government-funded UK pilot to quantify and publish the impact of its technology on farmers and environmental stewardship.
