Overview
Illumion is developing Charge Photometry, a microscope-based optical imaging technique that visualizes what happens to battery materials during charging and discharging and avoids destructive testing. The platform is designed to provide faster, accessible insights to accelerate battery material R&D and support development of more diversified battery chemistries. Launched in 2022 by CEO Dr. Christoph Schnedermann and Lead Scientist Dr. Alice Merryweather, the company builds on research from Prof. Dame Clare Grey and Prof. Akshay Rao at the University of Cambridge. Illumion closed a £2.1 million seed round to support expansion of its team, development of advanced analytical software, and pursuit of new market opportunities. The company positions its technology as a potential enabler to shorten the decade‑long cycle of battery material development and reduce reliance on destructive testing.
