InkHunter is an augmented reality tattoo try-on app that lets users browse thousands of designs and virtually place them on their skin using a few pen marks to anchor the AR. The app supports taking and sharing photos to solicit feedback and spread adoption. Born from a 48-hour hackathon in 2014, InkHunter launched an iOS MVP, later released an Android app after about 2.5 million downloads, and went through the ERA accelerator in summer 2016. After growing to roughly eight million users the team revived a marketplace strategy to create a try-and-buy experience that drives bookings for local tattoo artists. Current product work includes a concierge booking MVP (using Typeform) and plans for an in-app search listing licensed artists in selected locations; early signals include more than 500 booking requests in the first week and 45% of users saying they want a tattoo within the next few months.
