Tocano, founded in 2015 as a graduate student project from Delft University of Technology, is developing an inkless printing technique branded as Inkless that uses an infrared laser to carbonize paper surface to produce black-and-white prints. The company says the method requires no special paper or ink and can achieve blacks as dark and stable as ink-based prints. The team of eight employees is based in the Netherlands and is part of the Yes!Delft incubator, and the university provided early backing. The recent angel funding will be used to make the technology development-ready by improving quality and speed toward a competitive printing performance. Tocano plans to use a subsequent financing round to build its first commercial product and has held initial meetings with potential strategic partners and venture capitalists. Its first planned product targets industrial packaging and labeling (barcodes, shelf-life data, product codes), with later expansion into production, office, consumer, and receipt printers.
