Overview

INRange Systems develops EMMA, an Electronic Medication Management System that administers single oral doses and transmits adherence data to clinicians. EMMA, modeled after Veterans Administration dispensing units, was developed by cardiologist Dr. Mary Anne Papp, who served 17 years as a navy medical officer and VA physician. The device has U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance and accepts blister cards of medication that are fed like a DVD; pharmacists remotely program dispensing times and collect adherence data. Originally developed for Warfarin management, EMMA evolved to handle almost all oral medications and targets patients with histories of non-adherence who drive high healthcare costs. Key markets include the military—addressing medication errors and overdoses among returning veterans with traumatic brain injury and PTSD—and seniors who may use the device to remain at home longer. The company began commercializing EMMA in 2009 and is based in Altoona, Pennsylvania; it recently raised funding to support its remote medication management offering.
