InsectBiotech

Jaén, Andalucia, Spain, Europe

Overview

Founded in 2022, InsectBiotech operates a BSFL-based production model that converts olive pomace and other ag side streams into high-protein meal, oil, and frass. The company has developed a patent-protected mechanical/green-chemistry process to make olive pomace digestible for larvae, with pomace accounting for roughly 95% of its feedstock mix. Its planned Andalusia facility will run largely on solar (targeting 75–80% solar power) and is being sized to process 7,500 tons of feedstock annually initially, producing 1,300 tons of fresh larvae per year (about 300 tons of protein) and later scaling to higher larvae throughput. InsectBiotech emphasizes a modular, mid-scale, lower-tech facility design to balance automation with human labor and keep unit economics competitive, and says it has signed nearly a dozen LOIs with buyers across aquaculture, livestock, pet food, crop growers, and biodiesel firms. The company aims to expand to multiple farms in olive-producing regions and envisages a global footprint across several countries. The recent €7.2M financing will fund construction of the Andalusia site and the company’s transition to commercial-scale manufacturing.
