InstallMonetizer operates a selective ad network for desktop software developers that displays advertiser offers after a user installs software and pays the publisher per install. The company aggregates smaller publishers so they can monetize in the same way larger desktop software companies do. It provides non-personally identifiable data to advertisers to enable targeted campaigns and to measure whether offers drive downloads and actual usage. InstallMonetizer enforces strict publisher vetting—checking domain ownership and anti-virus history—and rejects roughly 95% of applicants. The startup launched two years ago and was part of Y Combinator's winter 2012 class; it now works with more than 9,000 publishers. The company says it is profitable and that the number of installations it drives doubles every two to three months. Until this press coverage the team had intentionally avoided tech media attention while building the network.
