Óir na Farraige is a newly established Galway-based company focused on expanding seaweed cultivation in Irish waters. The company is collaborating with EIT Food and partners from Ireland and Norway to reduce production costs, improve cultivation efficiency, and connect seaweed biomass with industrial demand. As part of the project, Norwegian partner Arctic Seaweed will demonstrate its integrated cultivation platform in Irish waters for the first time, and University of Galway will assess ecosystem service contributions and life-cycle impacts. Óir na Farraige aims to integrate multiple cultivation steps into a streamlined operational system to simplify deployment, reduce operational complexity, and increase biomass yields per hectare. The company secured project funding totaling €1.5 million and says the demonstration insights will help prepare it for planned commercial production from 2028.
