iWalk is a pioneer and leader in Personal Bionics whose core product line is built on proprietary BiOM technology. The first commercially available solution, the BiOM Ankle System, emulates calf muscle and Achilles tendon function to provide powered plantar flexion and a more natural gait for people with limb loss. BiOM is intended to enable natural, normalized and personalized movement so users can return to work and daily activities faster. The company plans to use recent funding to further develop and commercialize a series of Personal Bionics products and to expand its global sales and support infrastructure. iWalk’s solutions are currently available domestically through a network of Certified Bionics Centers, VA Medical Centers and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2006 by Dr. Hugh Herr, the company is headquartered in Bedford, Mass., and has received support from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Army’s TATRC and several venture firms. iWalk is developing a self-contained robotic prosthetic ankle intended to advance powered prostheses. The company is based in Cambridge, Mass. and was founded in 2006 by MIT Media Lab professor Hugh Herr. In August 2009 it received $20m of a $21m Series B round to support development of its device. The Series B funds were provided by Cambridge-based General Catalyst Partners and New York-based WFD Ventures LLC. This round follows a $3.7m Series A and brings iWalk’s total funding to over $23.7m.
