Overview

Jott is a messaging app that can send messages without a data plan or Wi‑Fi by using a mesh network over Bluetooth Low Energy or local routers within roughly a 100‑foot radius. The app runs on both iOS and Android and supports individual and group messaging inside closed school networks as well as connections outside the network via social or name-based adds. School-network users must register with real name, age, and verified school membership, and peers can flag fake accounts; the app also includes disappearing messages and screenshot detection for privacy. Jott has seen rapid adoption among junior high and high school students, more than doubling to about 500,000 active users in March from 150,000 and adding roughly 15,000–20,000 users per day; it began ranking in the top 75 iOS social networking apps in mid‑April. The company recently raised $1.7 million in seed funding and plans to use the cash for teen-focused marketing partnerships with online celebrities. Co‑founder Jared Allgood says the app is replacing iMessage at home for some teens without iPhones, and an internal Jott survey of 1,300 teens found iMessage remains preferred by 60 percent of respondents.
