KKBOX operates a streaming music service with localized features (karaoke-style lyrics, in-app artist chats) and a catalog of over 10 million tracks via deals with roughly 500 international and local labels. The service is available in six Asian markets and the company reports about 10 million users. Beyond streaming, KKBOX publishes a monthly music magazine and runs an annual music awards show in Taiwan. Founded in 2004, the company began overseas expansion in 2009 and has since pushed into markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Management says recent funds will be used to develop the company’s technology platform and services and continue expansion into additional markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. KKBOX faces competition from Western services like Spotify, which entered several Asian markets in 2013.
