Komaza

Seahorse Road, Kilifi, Kilifi County, 80108, Kenya

Overview

Komaza operates a tech-enabled microforestry platform that partners with smallholder farmers to produce sustainable wood at far lower cost than traditional plantations. The company uses AI, satellite data and real-time mobile apps to map growth and track farmer progress. Komaza has planted over 6 million trees with 25,000 smallholder farmers, with annual plantings nearly doubling Kenya’s rate of commercial tree planting and delivering an ~80% cost disruption per acre versus traditional plantations. The model aims to generate climate-resilient income for farmers while supplying domestic wood and relieving pressure on natural forests; Komaza is supported by Conservation International. Komaza targets planting one billion trees by 2030 and benefiting over 2 million farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa. To scale, the company plans to expand from its first site on Kenya’s coast to two additional East African sites, add wood manufacturing capacity, launch a direct-to-farmer app, and build on a remote sensing and AI monitoring pilot.
