Overview
Kontor is a New York City-based market network that provides a visual workflow tool for commercial interior design professionals to discover trends, collect inspiration, and share ideas. Its image-based platform contextually connects projects with products, enabling designers to link designs to brands and suppliers. At the time of the report Kontor had partnered with 600 design firms, including HOK, IA Interior Architects, Perkins + Will and STUDIOS Architecture, and brands such as Herman Miller, Knoll, Fritz Hansen and Tom Dixon. The company is led by CEO Mia Lewin, with Kevin Ryan as chairman, Andy Parsons as CTO and Tom Melcher among its leadership. Kontor raised $4.6M in venture capital and says it will use the funds to continue to expand operations. The financing is intended to support growth of its platform and expansion of its partnerships and operations. Kontor is a visual search and discovery platform focused on workplace and office design. The product lets firms upload public and private photos, automatically identifies items in images, and tags them to make portfolios and vendor catalogs searchable. It aims to let architectural firms more quickly organize and surface products and vendors, collaborate on projects, and advertise past work to prospective clients. Over time Kontor expects furniture vendors to help with tagging and pay for better placement against search terms as a monetization strategy. The company is positioning itself against a $70 billion commercial interiors market and is compared to a "Houzz for office design." Kontor is led day-to-day by CEO Mia Lewin and operates a New York-based team of about 10 people that will grow to 15 soon; it is launching a public beta later this summer and has roughly 30 firms signed up from conversations with about 50 firms.
