Overview

Kopi Kenangan is a Jakarta-based, new‑retail coffee chain launched in 2017 that offers grab-and-go Indonesian-style coffee and a diversified menu including es kopi, boba, and Thai-style milk tea and coffee. The startup uses an online-to-offline model: users order via a mobile app (claimed to have over a million customers) and pick up at kiosks or get delivery. It operates 324 outlets across Indonesia, many in shopping malls, and primarily targets millennial consumers. The company plans to use new funding to launch new products, enhance its technology base, and expand operations within Indonesia. After the Covid-19 pandemic abates, Kopi Kenangan intends to open stores in Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Management emphasizes contactless commerce and stricter hygiene standards as part of its recovery strategy. Founded in 2017 by Edward Tirtanata and James Prananto, Kopi Kenangan focuses on making quality, fresh coffee affordable with locally inspired drinks such as 'Es Kopi Kenangan Mantan' and ingredients sourced across Indonesia. The company operates 80 stores across eight cities and uses Go‑Jek (GoFood) and Grab (GrabFood) for about one‑third of orders. Kopi Kenangan says it is profitable thanks to managed inventory and waste‑sharing between neighboring branches. It reports selling close to one million cups per month, up from 175,000 cups in October. The startup plans aggressive expansion — targeting 500 stores by next year, including locations in two overseas markets — and will hire in those countries. Capital will be used to build out logistics (including RFID tracking), develop a new Internet of Things feature, and improve its apps and digital services.
