KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals is a privately held, clinical-stage biotech focused on discovery, development and commercialization of novel prescription products for the aesthetic market. Its lead program is ATX-101, a first-in-class synthetic injectable being studied for reduction of submental (under‑the‑chin) fat. Clinical development to date includes seven clinical trials with more than 350 subjects, three randomized double-blind placebo-controlled Phase II studies and four Phase I studies; two Phase III randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies are ongoing in Europe in collaboration with Bayer HealthCare’s dermatology unit Intendis. Intendis has licensed rights to ATX-101 outside the U.S. and Canada. KYTHERA plans to use proceeds from the financing to conduct U.S. Phase III trials for ATX-101 and projects starting U.S. Phase III late 2011 or early 2012. The company also maintains research programs in hair and fat biology, pigmentation modulation and facial contouring and has raised more than $108M across four private financing rounds.
