Lemon

Palo Alto, CA, United States

Overview

Lemon.com offers a cloud-based receipt organizer and spending-tracker mobile app. It recently soft-launched a digital wallet that stores users' credit, store, loyalty, ID, and insurance cards; the wallet is PIN-protected and functions primarily as a backup and for copying into mobile checkouts. The company plans to open its wallet platform to third parties in July, with partner announcements expected at launch, and intends to surface location-enabled coupons, offers and loyalty discounts. CEO Wences Casares says Lemon aims to be an open, consumer-focused wallet that allows third parties to operate within the platform rather than providing its own payment processing. Lemon emphasizes cross-platform availability and a feature set including receipt scanning, storage, card saving and forthcoming coupon support. The app is free with a $9.99/month premium tier; the Palo Alto-based startup had been bootstrapping until this funding. Lemon provides a free cloud service and mobile apps (Android and iOS) that let users store and organize email and paper receipts to track purchases and reduce clutter. Users can snap photos of paper receipts for Lemon to digitize, and digital receipts can be sent directly to a personal @lemon.com account. Lemon extracts product-level details from receipts to generate reports and graphs that illustrate spending trends, help with taxes, and simplify expense reports. The company says it will eventually offer targeted discounts and personalized promotions based on users' spending habits. Lemon soft-launched in the startup alley at TechCrunch Disrupt. The article notes the company is co-founded by co-CEO Wenceslao Casares and compares Lemon to services such as Shoeboxed, MyReceipts, Expensify, and KEEBO.
