LionVolt

High Tech Campus 27, Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, 5656AE, The Netherlands

Overview

LionVolt develops 3D solid-state lithium-ion batteries that the company says deliver high performance, fast charging, intrinsic safety, and improved sustainability. Its 3D electrode architecture, leveraging regional thin-film expertise, is claimed to be 100% safe, 50% lighter and to provide 200% improved performance versus the most advanced lithium-ion batteries. Founded in spring 2020 by Karl McGoldrick and Sandeep Unnikrishnan, LionVolt spun out last year from TNO’s Holst Centre and builds on seven years of research and development. The company is building a pilot production line at the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC) and recently acquired a battery cell production line from Scottish firm AMTE Power to step up manufacturing. LionVolt says it will use the €15M in equity funding raised over the past few months to accelerate growth and to position itself as a leading next-generation battery company in the Netherlands and the UK. Investor names were not disclosed. LionVolt spun off from TNO at the Holst Centre and builds on multiple years of research and development into a 3D solid-state lithium metal battery. The company says its design delivers higher energy density, faster charging, longer lifespan, and improved safety versus conventional lithium-ion batteries. LionVolt also claims its battery is lighter and more environmentally friendly, targeting reduced battery use and disposal. Its stated end markets include wearable devices, electric vehicles and aviation. Leadership cited support from TNO and regional partners to advance R&D and establish the Netherlands as a climate-tech hub. Financially, the company has raised seed and pre-seed funding this year to advance development.
