Overview
Founded in 2012 by husband-and-wife team Michal and Vlada Bortnik, Joya develops mobile applications that make video communication more convenient, personal, and entertaining. Its flagship products include FlipLip, which lets users overlay voices and effects on short video clips, and Cleo, which offers live filters for video selfies directly inside Facebook Messenger. Both apps were highlighted in Facebook’s Messenger platform launch, and FlipLip quickly earned a 5-star rating in the App Store. The company’s earlier release, Joya Video, was named one of TIME Magazine’s Top 50 Apps of 2013. After operating in stealth, Joya emerged via the Stanford-affiliated StartX accelerator and is now leveraging a fresh capital infusion to build the next generation of video communication technology. The recent financing brings its total known funding to $5 million. No user or revenue figures were disclosed, but the company plans to use the proceeds to expand product development and enhance its engineering capabilities.
