Maza
Union Square East, New York, 10003, United States
Overview
Maza automates issuance of individual tax identification numbers (ITINs) via IRS-certified acceptance agents to enable undocumented immigrants to access U.S. banking and financial products. The company issues immediate U.S. bank accounts and debit cards through partnerships with Visa and Blue Ridge Bank and offers peer-to-peer payments plus integrations with PayPal, Zelle, Venmo and CashApp. Maza says it handles customers' taxes, automatically renews financial identity documentation, and claims deposited funds earn one of the highest checking account interest rates. Since its 2022 inception the Los Angeles-based, 15-person startup has grown to 50,000 users (each paying $150 a year for access) and has enabled $41 million in digital payments to date. The company focuses on the Latino/Spanish-speaking population and has leaned on offline, community-targeted marketing in high-density neighborhoods. Maza plans to expand into credit-building products and to move beyond the U.S. market over time.
